With their life savings and financial help from their parents, the couple purchased 240 acres of redwood forest for $45,000—a hefty sum at the time. Today, that same land is valued between $4-6 million. But for Charles, it’s not the monetary value that matters; it’s the legacy he and Vanna Rae built there.
Their first project was an A-frame cabin, built with the help of family members for just $2,800. In only five days, they created a home that would shelter them and their two sons for 15 years. Over time, they expanded the house with extra rooms and innovative features like grapevine-covered blinds for natural temperature control.
Building a Self-Sufficient Paradise
The Bello family embraced a sustainable lifestyle, raising goats and chickens, growing fruits and vegetables, and even running a Christmas tree farm to generate income. In 1978, they expanded their property, purchasing an additional 150 acres for $30,000.

Charles dreams of finding “three highly motivated, middle-aged couples” to live on the property, embrace the off-grid lifestyle, and sustain the ranch’s mission. However, finding the right people has proven challenging. Of the 15-20 individuals who have tried, none were ready for the daily labor and commitment the lifestyle demands.
“It’s a lot of work,” Charles admits, “but it’s also a life filled with purpose and beauty.”
